Term Definition
Defrag
  1. Common abbreviation for degrament, the process of rearranging how files are stored on a disk to make them contiguous rather than scattered all over the disk. See defragment for details.
    1. The name of the disk defragmentation utility included in MS-DOS and newer versions of Windows.
Defragment

A process for rearranging the clusters on a disk for each file so that they are adjacent rather than scattered all over the disk.

Files with adjacent clusters are quicker to read (because this minimises any required movement of the disk heads), than if the clusters are scattered all over the disk (because that requires frequent movement of the disk read heads). For this reason a computer with a defragemented disk (i.e. with all its files defragmented) will run faster than if it had a heavily fragemented disk - but only for disk related operations.

DSL
  1. Digital Subscriber Line.
    1. Domain Specific Language(s).
DVD

Digital Video Disk, or Digital Versatile Disk. DVDs have varying capacities from 4.7GB to 17GB.

A conventional single layer recordable DVD will hold up to 4.7GB of data per disk. A recordable dual-layer DVD will hold up to 8.5GB of data. Dual-layering allows two layers to be stored on the same side of the DVD. When playing a DVD there is normally a slight pause when the DVD player switches layers (as the laser repositions to read the second layer).
